The most popular is the Zodiac Inflatable Boats,It may well be a name synonymous with star gazing, but Zodiac inflatables have made their name in a more down to earth environment; a marine one. This is the sort of boat that Jacques Cousteau called upon when it came time to do some hard work in places that would have been otherwise inaccessible. Once only known as a marine tender vessel, and then only for the more commercial and military aspects, the Zodiac is now very much a part of the civilian recreational scene.
For most of us concerned with overland travel, a boat of some sort is always in the back of your mind. We often find ourselves pulled up for a camp beside a river or a decent waterhole of some sort, and the best way to explore any body of water is by boat. If you happen to be like a lot of people and live in the city where space is at a premium, you may not have the room to store a boat or canoe. For those who want to pull a caravan or camper trailer, having a boat as well may create similar problems. The solution here is often found in getting into an inflatable.
The boat we’ve been testing here is the Zodiac three-meter Cadet Fastroller. The Cadet is actually 3.1 metres in length. It will carry up to four adults in safety, and can be fitted with outboard motors of up to ten horsepower. The Cadet range offers boats from 2.4 metres to 3.4 metres in length, and all offer separately inflatable floor and keel sections. The 3.1 metre that we have been playing with is the second largest in this line-up and tips the scales at 25kg. This makes it fairly easy for two people to hoist up onto a roof rack. The boat itself when rolled up in its carry bag is about one metre long by 30cm deep and 50cm wide. This includes the seat and oars that break down into two pieces.
Getting the 3.1m Cadet into the water is not all that difficult; just unroll it on the ground, then inflate the keel section followed by the floor. The sides and bow are inflated in two sections but only partially. This is so you can fit the seat up to the gunwale mounts easily, before completing the inflation process. Set-up time is only about ten minutes once you’ve got a bit of practice, and that’s pretty good. There are separate valves for inflating the floor, keel and each side. There is no separate inflation chamber for the bow.
The Cadet is well catered for in terms of grab handles as well as D rings for lifting or towing. In fact moving this boat around whether in or out of the water is pretty easy. There was no outboard motor available for this test so propulsion was at all times handled by the oars. These fold back out of the way along the gunwales, where they can be clipped into place. We found the oars quite easy to use, although a method of locking them into one position in the rowlocks would be handy. Without this they do tend to slide in and out a bit, and this can cause a few problems.
Having said that, the Cadet is dead easy to manoeuvre on the water, and this is of absolute importance when you are fishing. We found that casting lures along a river with one person on the paddles and another flicking the lure out worked well. Solo fishermen should not be concerned though, you could handle the boat well enough by yourself – boating just always seems more fun with company.
We are pleased to Zodiac inflatable on the way to do a 310 set, so that more robust and reliable inflatable material, using it can get very fun. Our site is http://www.inflatablesonsale.com.
